EXCELLENT TURNOUT FOR AGM
Over 50 people squeezed into the Albany Sailing Centre for CARA’s AGM on 18th October – it was really good to see so much support. Especially welcome was the fact that three more volunteers came forward for the committee: Nicky Bate, Huw Rees and Pat Wheaton. Many thanks to Vernon Holdaway, who stood down from the committee, for his hard work and support over the years.
Topics discussed included the Woodside Road alley, the need for lighting in Canbury Gardens and the boat trailers on Lower Ham Road – all of which are sadly familiar from previous meetings. CARA will continue to press councillors and council officers for action to address these problems.
CARA’s finances are currently in a healthy state and a suggestion that we might contribute towards funding lighting in Canbury Gardens (i.e. reinstating the decorative lighting in the plane trees) was generally supported at the meeting. If you have any views on this, we would be very pleased to hear them.
Our guest speaker was Russell Walker, the manager of the new Sainsbury store on the Richmond Road. He led a very informative discussion; points to note include the fact that most deliveries will be made between
6am and 8am (because of the time restrictions placed on the store) and that as far as he knows this is the only Sainsbury store to have an enclosed delivery area to reduce noise. We also learned that the chemist on Richmond Road (Mr. Jethwa) will be moving to the Sainsbury site and Mr. Walker said there would not be home deliveries; this last point was rather a surprise as during the consultation stage we had been led to believe there would be. CARA will be following this up as it would certainly cut down on traffic congestion. Mr Walker assured us that he will work hard to ensure that deliveries do not creep outside the allowed hours, and to ensure that stray trolleys are quickly rounded up.

STOP PRESS
CARA has spoken to the Council about home deliveries from the new Sainsbury store. Sainsbury has a legal requirement to introduce measures to minimise traffic congestion - the council is of the view that home delivery would help, and will press for this. If you agree and would like home delivery please let Sainsbury know!

CHRISTMAS CRIME PREVENTION TIPS
Christmas is traditionally a time to celebrate for many people, but it can too easily become a time of rich pickings for burglars and other criminals. You can take sensible preventative measures to help you have a crime free Christmas.

Your home:
* Make sure you have good quality door locks on external doors
* Fit window locks to all accessible windows
* Burglars may target your home if you are going away for Christmas, but remember it is just as vulnerable if you are going out for the day, or even just for half an hour; so use the locks that you have
* Check the security requirements on your household contents insurance, if you don’t comply with the requirements you may not be covered
* Make sure your garden shed is locked - don't help burglars by leaving ladders and tools available

Your presents:
* Don't put all your Christmas presents on display in the front window under a well-lit tree
* Where appropriate, postcode presents as soon as possible
* Make a note of serial numbers, particularly on electrical goods
* Take care when discarding packaging - don't give potential burglars clues to new items in the house

When shopping:
* When withdrawing cash from banks and building societies, try to avoid taking large quantities in one transaction, only take as much as you need
* In busy crowded shopping areas it is much easier for pickpockets to strike, ensure your cash and credit cards are safe
* When shopping never leave items on display in your car, lock them out of sight in the boot, and don’t leave the receipts in the bag with the item

If you have doubts about the security of your home contact the Crime Prevention Office on 020 8247 5656 and they will send you a selection of literature to help you secure your home.

Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) Survey for Albany Park Road, Bank Lane & the northern section of Lower Ham Road
Everyone is acutely aware that the new Sainsburys store development is already having a profound effect on the nature of traffic in our area. With Christmas Shopping in full swing, Richmond Road frequently turns into a traffic jam and many of us have seen where we live turned into an overflow car park for both shoppers and retail staff alike. As the effects have become more pronounced in the last two months we have received a large amount of feedback asking us to consider the merits of extending the existing river roads controlled parking zone (CPZ) beyond its current boundaries so that it may include Bank Lane, Albany Park Road, Albany Mews and the northern section of Lower Ham Road. CARA does not wish to see the parking problem pushed into the streets of other CARA households. As such, it may be inevitable that the whole CARA area will have some form of controlled parking at a future date (the CARA area is bordered by Hawker Leisure, the River, Richmond Road and Kings Road).

As happened previously, we need to better understand the views of local residents who would be affected by such proposals. To this end, we would appreciate you responding to a short survey. The more responses we get will be a good indicator of the depth of feeling which influence the outcome of conversations with the Council and other interested parties.

Please take a few minutes to respond and forward to CPZ Survey, Canbury & Riverside Residents Association, c/o 18 Woodside Road, Kingston-upon-Thames, KT2 5AT. Alternatively please feel free to email your comments to: cara_feedback@hotmail.com
